A security researcher discovered that over 143,000 user conversations from AI platforms, including ChatGPT, Claude, and Copilot, were publicly accessible through Archive.org, with some containing exposed AWS Access Key IDs and API tokens that could be leveraged by a malicious actor. OpenAI confirmed a data breach caused by a bug in ChatGPT’s Redis memory database, which allowed users to view others’ chat histories and potentially exposed the payment information of approximately 1.2% of active ChatGPT Plus subscribers, including names, email addresses, and partial credit card details. On the development side, Anthropic’s Claude Code CLI source code was accidentally exposed through debug files mistakenly included in a public release, revealing internal architecture and security guardrail configurations. Perhaps most concerning, unauthorized users gained access to Anthropic’s Claude Mythos Preview, a restricted AI cybersecurity model capable of discovering zero-day vulnerabilities, by exploiting shared accounts and API keys belonging to authorized third-party contractors. These incidents demonstrate that AI-related data exposure can stem from many sources, including user behavior, software bugs, development mistakes, and third-party vendor weaknesses.

How to Reduce Risk While Still Allowing AI Use

For organizations that choose to permit the use of AI chatbots, implementing appropriate controls can significantly reduce the risk of data exposure. AI usage policies serve as the foundation, clearly defining what types of data employees can and cannot enter into AI tools, setting expectations around approved platforms, and establishing accountability when those boundaries are crossed. Enterprise subscriptions offer an added layer of protection over free or consumer-grade alternatives, as they typically include stronger data privacy commitments, ensure that conversations are not used to train AI models, and provide administrators with greater visibility and control over how the tools are being used within the organization. Tight controls over integrations and plugins are equally critical, as third-party connections to AI platforms can introduce unexpected data flows and access points that bypass existing security measures, much like the vendor access exploitation seen in the Anthropic Mythos breach. Finally, security awareness training ensures that employees understand the real-world consequences of entering sensitive data into AI tools, recognize that even casually shared conversations can be archived or indexed publicly, and know how to make informed decisions when using these technologies in their day-to-day work. Together, these controls do not eliminate risk entirely, but they create meaningful barriers that reduce the likelihood and impact of an AI-related data incident.
